This notice explains what the charltonlive.co.uk website collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to comply with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The Charlton Live mobile app is covered by a separate privacy policy, because it collects different things to this website.
Who we are
This website is run by Charlton Live, an independent fan-produced podcast about Charlton Athletic. For any privacy question or request, email privacy@charltonlive.uk.
The short version
- There are no accounts on this website, and nothing to sign up for.
- We do not ask for your name, address, phone number or location.
- Comments are switched off, so there is no comment form collecting anything.
- We use one analytics tool, StatCounter, and only if you agree to it.
- We do not run advertising, and we do not sell or share anything about you.
What the website collects
Visitor statistics, only with your agreement
We use StatCounter to count visits and see which pages are being read. It sets cookies and records your IP address, browser, device type, rough location from that IP, and the pages you view. We use this to understand what people find useful, not to identify anyone.
It does not load until you agree. The first time you visit, a bar appears at the bottom of the page asking. Until you choose, nothing is loaded, and if you decline, nothing is loaded at all. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookies link in the footer of every page. Read StatCounter’s privacy policy.
Security logging
The site runs Wordfence, a security plugin. It records IP addresses, requests and failed login attempts so it can block attacks and brute-force attempts. This runs whether or not you agree to analytics, because without it the site cannot defend itself. Read Wordfence’s privacy policy.
Server logs
Our web host keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses and the pages requested. These are used to run and secure the site.
Anything you send us
If you email the studio, or message us on social media, we hold whatever you send for as long as we need it to reply and to keep a record of the conversation. We do not add you to any mailing list, because we do not run one.
Content loaded from other companies
Some parts of the site load content from elsewhere. When that happens, those companies receive your IP address and can set their own cookies, exactly as if you had visited them directly. We do not control what they do with it.
- YouTube (Google) for video thumbnails and embedded players. Google’s privacy policy.
- Google Fonts for the typefaces the site uses.
- Acast for podcast episode artwork and links. Acast’s privacy policy.
- football-data.org for club crests shown in the league table.
- NewsNow, whose badge appears in the footer.
- api.charltonlive.uk, our own service, which supplies fixtures, results and the league table. It is contacted by our server rather than by your browser, so it does not see your IP address.
Cookies
The website sets one cookie of its own, to remember whether you agreed to analytics. It holds nothing but that answer and lasts six months, after which we ask again.
If you agree to analytics, StatCounter then sets its own cookies. Wordfence may set one if it needs to identify a blocked visitor, and an embedded YouTube player will set its own if you interact with it. If you are logged in to WordPress as an editor, WordPress sets its own session cookies.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works normally without them.
Legal bases
- Analytics cookies rest on your consent, which you give through the bar at the bottom of the page and can withdraw from the footer at any time.
- Security logging and server logs rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the site online and protected from attack.
- Correspondence rests on our legitimate interest in answering you.
How long we keep things
StatCounter and Wordfence keep their own records to their own retention schedules, linked above. Server logs are kept by our host for a short period. Email correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful, and deleted on request.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us for a copy of any personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or erase it, or object to how we are using it. Email privacy@charltonlive.uk and we will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
This site is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect anything about them.
Changes
If this notice changes we will update the date shown at the top of this page.
