Charlton enhanced their promotion prospects with a hard fought 3-0 win over Yeovil at The Valley on Tuesday evening. A first win in four matches was vital for a side that had looked short on confidence over the past few weeks.

The hosts were keen to put their opponents on the back foot and were quick out of the blocks. Loan signing Danny N’Guessan gave them a seventh minute lead when his wayward cross from the left sailed into the far top corner and deceived Glovers keeper Sam Walker.

Yeovil had chances of their own in the first half, and weren’t phased  by the early goal they conceded. Nor were they afraid to try their luck from long range, as Dean Parrett saw his effort go wide, and Andrew Williams, who was full of running, couldn’t quite find a way past Ben Hamer.

The Londoners also had chances of their own in the first period. Yann Kermogant came close with a header from a Chris Solly corner, and Rhoys Wiggins almost doubled the lead when his strike was blocked by Yeovil defender Luke Ayling.

The second half saw much the same as the first, with both teams cancelling each other out for long periods of the game. Ben Hamer made an excellent stop to deny Bondz N’Gala, but it was the leaders who doubled their advantage on the hour.

A well rehearsed free kick, delicately chipped in by Wiggins, was powerfully headed back across goal by Kermogant, leaving top scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips to grab his 21st goal of a fantastic season.

Yeovil refused to give in, and their efforts were almost rewarded when Lawson D’Ath saw his attempt hit the crossbar. But Charlton grabbed the defining third goal, when the energetic Wiggins saw his cross converted by Darel Russell.

The win leaves Charlton nine points ahead of Sheffield United. Sheffield Wednesday dropped two points at home to Walsall, and if Chris Powell’s troops can turn in a few more of these efficient and professional performances, promotion will be theirs.
